Submission of the Final Manuscript

After all corrections that were suggested before and during the oral defense have been made, the dissertation is ready for submission.

You will need to create an account with ProQuest.  You will select College of William and Mary - School of Education when you set up your account. Within ProQuest, you will select publishing options, with both ProQuest and the William & Mary Institutional Repository, create your contact information, include information about your dissertation, and upload a PDF file of your dissertation and supplemental files.

While ProQuest can convert your file to PDF for you, it is suggested that you create a PDF so that you can ensure all of the formatting is correct once in PDF format.

The Step by Step instructions for using ProQuest will help you navigate the online process.  You will upload the signed copy of the Dissertation Defense Verification form and the William & Mary Institutional Repository (IR)  - University Agreement as supplemental forms. (You can locate the WM IR agreement within ProQuest under IR Publishing Options and then University Agreement.)

Within ProQuest, you can also register US Copyright, obtain a Creative Commons license, and purchase bound copies of your dissertation.   While you probably wish to have a bound copy for your own library, you may also want to provide your dissertation chairperson with a copy of the final manuscript.  While you can purchase bound copies through ProQuest, a less expensive option is through Lulu.  This company offers many more print options.  Students can upload their final document  to this site and choose cover art, etc for their own print copies.

Once any fees for services and/or copies have been paid through ProQuest, you can submit your dissertation.  Once you have submitted your dissertation and the supplemental forms through ProQuest, you will receive a confirmation email.  After your dissertation is accepted by the School of Education Registrar, you will be notified via email, and your dissertation will be submitted to ProQuest.

The deadline for submission of the dissertation through ProQuest is at least two weeks prior to the scheduled graduation date. Specific dates can be found on the Graduation page.

Ph.D. candidates must also complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates.  (This survey is a requirement for Ph.D. graduation candidates only.)  The School of Education participates in the electronic completion for the Survey of Earned Doctorates.  You will be asked to provide your name, institution, department, graduation month and year, and an e-mail address.  You will be able to advance directly into the survey after registering.  Upon submitting the survey you will receive a Certificate of Completion via email.  Please print a copy for your records.
