- Thinking beyond tests and papers; giving students multiple ways and repeated opportunities to reflect upon and demonstrate their learning and growth.
- Creating opportunities for students to make their learning visible to the full learning community to help build solidarity as opposed to competition around assessment.
- Creating low-stakes opportunities for students to practice before they are asked to perform.

Examples and considerations on how to:
- Incorporate low stakes opportunities for practice and feedback
- Reduce stereotype threat
- Avoid assignment prompts that may marginalize students
- Provide choice, creativity, flexibility for assignments
- Respect different “ways of knowing”
- Make expectations clear to students
- Don’t reward or penalize perspectives or opinions
- Grade anonymously
- Grade one question at a time rather than one student at time
- Provide flexibility in grading policies
