Christine L. Hill, Ph.D. '02, selected to be new Deputy Chief of Curriculum for DoDEA
Dr. Hill joined DoDEA in March 2009 as the Coordinator of Gifted Education and Advanced Placement. Dr. Hill began her teaching career in Iowa in 1987 and, since that time, has taught in schools in Hawaii, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. In addition to teaching students in grades K-8, she also served as an adult education instruction at Halawa Medium/High Correctional Facility in Aiea, Hawaii where she worked with inmates to complete the GED. After graduate school, she went on to serve as a professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She has also worked as a Central Office Supervisor for Gifted Services and as an Elementary Principal of Title I Schools in Tidewater Virginia.
In announcing her selection, Chief of Curriculum, Dr. Marc Mossburg, welcomed the experience and expertise that Dr. Hill will bring to her new duties.
"Dr. Hill brings to the Ed Directorate leadership experience at the school and district level that focused on using data to inform instruction and curriculum policies," said Mossburg. Additionally, Chrystie grew up in a military family and is a military spouse which gives her great insight into the military family. I look forward to her work with the Ed Directorate."
Dr. Hill is also a product of DoDDS schools. Born in Washington, D.C., she is the eldest of two children. Both her parents were enlisted in the U.S. Army. Her father was career enlisted and served two tours in Vietnam. Dr. Hill traveled with her family in the U.S. and Europe until they settled in Estherville, Iowa when her father retired from Ft. Eustis, VA.
Hill earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa with a major in Education (K-8) and a concentration in Reading. She received her Masters degree in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in gifted education and curriculum and instruction from The University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. In 2002, she graduated with her Ph.D. in Education Policy, Planning, and Leadership from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA.
Dr. Hill has a vast background of experience with curriculum and instruction. She has been trained in numerous curriculum development models and served on national curriculum writing teams. In addition, she has led the teams of content experts in the development of division-wide curriculum during her central office tenure. In 2001, she began working as a national consultant and has worked for both Pearson Professional Development and the HOPE Foundation. In this role, she has provided staff development training for schools district across the country on a variety of educational topics. Her enthusiasm, knowledge, presentation style and sense of humor made her a popular consultant and presenter. She has presented at more than 100 local, state, and national conferences.
Dr. Hill met her husband, David, in a scuba diving class in Hawaii and they have been married for 20 years. David is a retired Army officer and currently works as Chief of the Solutions Analysis Branch for the Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, VA. "
