Mathematics SOL Enhanced Scope & Sequence Sample Lesson Plans for grades K-5 are now available on the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website, searchable by both keyword and SOL (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/scope_sequence/mathematics_2009/index.php).

Grades 6-8 and the reporting categories Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra, Functions & Data Analysis sample lesson plans will be posted to the VDOE website soon.  These lessons serve as a valuable instructional tool to facilitate content connections and differentiation.  Many of the lessons include opportunities to practice math content.

One way to liven practice time for students is to use math apps that are fun and engaging.  iPod Touches, iPads, and iPhones have such apps, available for free.  Technology in the classroom should be directly linked to instructional objectives.  The applications listed below are highlighted because of their instructional math content, their alignment to the math strands or reporting categories, and the absence of distracting advertisements.

Math Strand Focus
Computation and Estimation

Math Tutor Lite app helps students practice addition, multiplication, subtraction, or division.  There are six levels of difficulty for each skill, and students receive instant feedback on how well they did.
Algebra and

iFormulas app contains over 330 formulas, definitions, laws, and properties, and is a quick reference guide for algebra, geometry, calculus, and trigonometry. No answers; just formulas needed to calculate the answer.
Number and Number Sense

Number Line app will help your students learn about fractions, decimals, percentages and their equivalents. There are several levels.  The objective is to drag objects onto a number line in the correct numerical order.

Units app is a measurement converter. You can convert area, currency, energy, temperature, time, length, weight, speed, and pressure quickly and easily.
