Guiding children through the school years

The School Counseling Program prepares prospective counselors to assume positions in elementary, middle, and secondary schools. The philosophical underpinnings for the School Counseling Curriculum support a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program that incorporates a balanced programming approach. The balanced approach addresses both the developmental needs of students and simultaneously incorporates mechanisms of support for those pupils who are more susceptible to arrested development. The School Counseling Curriculum stresses the cognitive, affective, and physical growth and development of children, with a particular concentration on utilizing counselors' knowledge and skills to maximize student learning. Within the School Counseling Curriculum students acquire competencies for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling programs.

Full-time students complete the program in two years and one summer. The curricular sequence integrates didactic instruction with field-based practica and internship experiences. During the clinical component of the program, students are placed in a working environment that is consistent with their program and their career goals. Students complete a 150 hour practicum followed by a 600 hour internship. All school counseling interns are required to organize and submit a portfolio.

The School Counseling Program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The curriculum also adheres to guidelines prescribed by the National Standards for School Counselors, an initiative undertaken by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA). Our graduates are well-prepared, highly sought after, and go on to pursue rewarding careers as school counselors.

First Aid , CPR and AED Training Licensure Requirement

Students seeking licensure in Virginia will need to complete training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillators.  Students will need to provide documentation of completion of this training, which is usually an official card.  Training courses are offered by the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association.
