Register for Classes

(757) 221-2316
FAX: (757) 221-2293
Gwendolyn E. Pearson, Graduate Registrar

NOTE: Blackboard is NOT the same thing as Banner registration. Blackboard is a site used by some (but not all) professors to communicate class assignments, syllabi, grades, etc. If you do not have a class listed under Blackboard, it does not mean that you are not registered for that class. You must check the Banner registration screen to find your listing of classes. If the professor is using Blackboard and you do not have access to that class, please check with the professor.

1. How do I register if I am an unclassified, non-matriculating student and just wish to take a course?

The School of Education offers classes that may be taken by anyone with a bachelor's degree.  Some classes are restricted to matriculating students, or require the permission of the instructor.  Many classes, however, are open to anyone wishing to enroll.  First-time registration is done in-person in the Office of Admission and Professional Services in Jones Hall, room 100.  Once you are in the system, you may register on-line through the web from any computer in the following semesters.  A listing of classes which are offered during a semester may be found on the Registrar's web site at:
http://www.wm.edu/registrar/registration.php.

Descriptions and restrictions on the classes offered may be found in our catalog at:
http://www.wm.edu/education/forms/catalog2006.pdf beginning on page 66.

Summer registration for those seeking to enroll in a course that are not in the College's registration system: You may register in person beginning the week the class begins.  Simply bring the registration form, and the domicile form for in-state rates (if applicable), to Jones Hall, room 100 and we will register you. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. All registration for graduate level education classes is done in the School of Education.

Unclassified students who have taken classes during the previous semester and are in the College's registration system can pre-register or register on-line via http://my.wm.edu.

2. How do I register if I am a newly admitted degree-seeking student?

a. Go to http://my.wm.edu

Log in as instructed. If you do not know or have your WM user id, click on the blue link below the log in screen and follow the directions.

b. To search for available classes, check the class search schedule.

c. To register, click on Banner Web and follow the directions. For other information on how to use Banner Web, go here.

3. How do I find out when/where classes are being held?

All class information can be found on-line via my.wm.edu. In addition, you may use the Registrar's Banner Web page.

A full listing of classes is given on the Registrar's web site here.

4. What are the add/drop and other registration dates?

Please see the School of Education's calendar.

5. I'm having difficulty registering for a class and/or the class is closed.

Contact the professor responsible for the class. If further problems occur, please visit Jones 100.

6. Can I drop or withdraw from classes if I am receiving financial aid?

Enrollment implications - Please be aware that in most cases, financial aid awards are determined based on full time enrollment. If you drop below full time enrollment status, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid (757-221-2420) to be sure you understand how this will affect your financial aid. Financial aid is not available for those enrolled less than half time.

7. I am an undergraduate and I'd like to take a Master's level education class.

To take a graduate course, you must obtain instructor permission and then visit the Undergraduate Dean of Arts and Sciences.

8. I'm an undergraduate and wish to take a 5th year to complete a Master's degree in a teacher licensure program.

To obtain your Masters in Curriculum & Instruction directly after completing your undergraduate from William and Mary you must apply. Please stop by Jones 100, or download an application or visit this link to request a form.

9. How can I get forms?

Please check the Forms Page and download what you need. ALL Program of Study forms are available on this page.

Frequently requested forms include:

Registration Form (for unclassified students)

Graduate Assistantship

Domicile Form

10. Can I take courses for licensure only?

William and Mary has no licensure-only programs. Candidates for initial elementary or secondary teacher licensure as well as licensure for administration and supervision must be enrolled in a degree-granting program. Non-degree seeking individuals are permitted to take certain classes in the teacher and administrator licensure programs but cannot complete the entire sequence required for licensure until they are admitted to the School of Education as a degree-seeking student. Following completion of a degree program, a student may apply for the state of Virginia licensure through our Office of Professional Services.

11. Where is the Peninsula Center and what classes are offered there?

Selected courses in the EPPL K-12 administrative licensure program are taught at the Peninsula Center each semester. Other classes taught at the Peninsula Center are generally those for which school divisions have contracted with William and Mary faculty to teach classes for their employees. Because the school division partially funds the class, only designated employees of that school division may enroll in the class. If you have questions about a class being taught at the Peninsula Center, please call the Office in Jones 100 at 221-2317.

Directions to the Peninsula Center:

  • From either Williamsburg or Norfolk take I-64 to Oyster Point Road West exit
  • Take the first left onto Canon Boulevard which is the first light
  • Take the first right onto Middleground Boulevard which is the first light
  • Take the second left onto Fishing Point Drive
  • Take the fourth driveway on the left -- 11828-30 Fishing Point Drive
