Information regarding admission to all programs in the School of Education and application packets containing an application form, letter of recommendation forms, in-state tuition application form, and detailed application instructions may be obtained from the Application link above, or from the Office of Academic Programs.

The following items must be submitted to the Office of Academic Programs before an application for admission will be processed: 

  1. Official application form (you can apply on-line.)
  2. Official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work, unofficial or student copy transcripts will not be considered for admission purposes. 
  3. Official test scores, not more than five years old , from either the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT)( Note:  The MAT test is accepted by the Educational Policy, Planning & Leadership program - all emphases, and the following Curriculum & Instruction programs only: Reading, Language & Literacy, Special Education, Gifted Education).  All other programs only accept the GRE test.  Applicants whose native language is other than English must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in addition to the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination.  Be sure to send your scores to the appropriate school/department code in order for us to receive it.
  4. Letters of recommendation from three persons qualified to evaluate the applicant's personal, ethical, and academic or professional qualifications for graduate study. It is suggested that the applicant present a combination of professional, academic, and personal references. The written references will be used exclusively for purposes of admission to the School of Education. 
  5. A $45.00 non-refundable application fee. 
  6. A personal essay describing your career aspirations and why you have decided to seek admission to the College of William and Mary, School of Education. Your essay should describe your past experiences, both academic and volunteer or work-related, that are relevant to graduate study as well as the professionalism and perspectives that you will bring to your program. In support of your candidacy, please provide additional information concerning such areas as leadership potential, collaborative skills, and propensity to engage in reflective practice.
  7. Any additional materials or documentation required by specific programs. EPPL Doctoral candidates must include a research paper. An interview may be optional at the discretion of the faculty.

Please note that only "complete" applications will be considered for review.

General Admission Guidelines
 

Admission to master's, educational specialist, and doctoral programs in the School is a competitive process. The following are norms which are intended to serve as general admission guidelines only.  However all applications will be reviewed holistically, taking into account such factors as demonstrated performance in advanced graduate coursework, career goals, relevant work experience, and potential for success in a position of leadership in education. 

Master's

  • Grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) 
  • 40th percentile on either the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE*)

Educational Specialist & Doctoral

  • Grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in master's degree work for doctoral programs
  • Grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in master's degree work for Ed.S. School Psychology program      
  • 60th percentile on either the MAT or the General Test of the GRE* for doctoral programs
  • 50th percentile on General Test of the GRE* for School Psychology master's and Ed.S. programs

 * The GRE is required of all applicants to the Master's, Ed.S., and Doctoral Programs. The Miller's Analogy Test (MAT) may be substituted in the Educational Policy, Planning & Leadership program (all areas) and Curriculum & Instruction Reading, Special Education and Gifted Education only.

Application Deadline Dates

The application deadline is February 1 every year. If this date happens to fall on a weekend, applications will be due the next business day after February 1. In addition, the following programs have a fall admission cycle which is October 1:

  • Education Policy Planning & Leadership - K-12 General Administration, Special Education Administration, Gifted Education Administration, Curriculum Leadership only.
  • Curriculum & Instruction - Reading, Language & Literacy, Special Education, Resource Collaborating Teaching, and Gifted Education endorsement areas only.
