English as a Second Language Summer Institute

May 30 - August 2, 2012

The second English as a Second Language  ESL Summer Institute will continue the partnership between the School of Education, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Public Schools and Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS).  Added in 2012 is the Newport News Public Schools (NNPS).

Participating students learn theory and practice appropriate for meeting the multilingual needs of students in the United States and abroad. Courses are available to students who are pursuing an ESL dual endorsement, students who would like to teach abroad, graduates of the School of Education in the past two years, and teachers who have worked with our students during ESL field experiences.

Students completing 9-12 credit hours and 150 hours of field experiences are eligible for an ESL dual endorsement to accompany their initial teaching license.

Students seeking a dual endorsement are given field experiences in WJCC, HCPS and NNPS schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Christine Ammirati tutoring an ESL student during the 2011 ESL InstituteStudent survey data from the 2011 ESL Institute provided valuable information for program development. The partnership is supported by a Department of Education Preparing Inclusive Educators (PIE) grant.  For more information contact Dr. Gail McEachron, (gamcea@wm.edu) or see Dual Endorsement.
