Steven Staples
Dr. Staples received his BA in History from William and Mary (Go Tribe!) and his Masters in Ed Administration from William and Mary (he bleeds green and gold). He received his Ed.D. in Education Administration from Virginia Tech (only because he couldn’t get all of his degrees from W&M at the time!)
Dr. Staples teaches courses in Policy, Theories of Curriculum, Educational Facilities, School & Community Relations, School Law and School Finance. His reach interests are in the area of school board/superintendent relations and characteristics. His major accomplishments include Virginia Superintendent of the Year (1997), President Virginia Association of School Superintendents (1999), William and Mary Kappa Delta Pi Distinguished Educator Award (2001), and the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award - University Council for Educational Administration (2002.)
Why did you come to W&M?
After 17 years as a school superintendent, I wanted the next phase of my career to focus on helping prepare the next generation of K-12 school leaders. I have always enjoyed teaching and was attracted to ending my career back in the classroom. The quality of the programs at W & M and the chance to return to my alma mater was too good to pass up.
What do you like best about W&M?
I think there are two aspects I value at W&M. First, the commitment to high quality programs and teaching. William and Mary has a reputation for high quality that sets a standard for faculty and students alike. You know that and accept it when you “sign on.” Secondly, W&M’s rich history and small size feel make for a personal and professional experience that is quite unique.
Why should prospective students come to W&M?
The School of Education’s small size and faculty expertise are quite a powerful combination. There is a focus on teaching and a commitment to providing students with a quality educational experience. Students don’t “get lost in the shuffle” and graduates report their W&M experiences prepared them for their work in the field.
