Susan Q. Bruno

M.Ed., Director of Historic Triange Substance Abuse Coalition (HTSAC)

Susan BrunoA longtime Williamsburg resident, Susan Bruno holds a M.Ed. in Community and Addictions Counseling from the College of William & Mary and a B.S. in Journalism from The Ohio University.

Susan joined HTSAC in February 2008 after working as a substance abuse counselor with Colonial Community Corrections in Williamsburg for two years. She also worked with women in incarceration at Southside Virginia Regional Jail in Emporia, Virginia, and with the Prince George (VA) Drug Court program through the Center For Therapeutic Justice.

Prior to her career as a substance abuse counselor, Susan worked in various capacities from news reporter and feature writer to managing editor at several Virginia daily and weekly newspapers. She also worked as manager of news services at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. As Coalition director, she is responsible for day-to-day operations and oversight at HTSAC, where she also screens and refers clients seeking treatment and recovery assistance for tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs dependencies.

Susan also represents HTSAC in collaboration with several community groups including the United Way of Greater Williamsburg, Williamsburg Area Chamber & Tourism Alliance, Colonial Community Criminal Justice Board (CCCJB), the Network for Latino Peoples, SpiritWorks Foundation, the Greater Williamsburg Food Assistance Network, and the Senior Services Coalition.

Susan loves cooking, gardening, music, and the family’s pets, Obie and Beau, two rescue dogs, and an oversized black cat named Coal.  She lives in James City County with her husband Michael, who is dean of instructional services at Thomas Nelson Community College’s Historic Triangle Campus. Susan and Michael have one son, Evan, a junior at Christopher Newport University who is studying choral direction and voice. The Brunos consider Duck, N.C., their home-away-from-home and often burn up the highway between Jamestown and their oceanside hideaway.
