Fall 2017

Welcome back, and to our new faculty, welcome to the School of Education! TheTechnology Integration Center, located on the second floor in the School of Education, provides support for integrating academic technologies into your teaching and research. We work closely with the School of Education deans, Information TechnologyW&M Libraries, and the Office of University eLearning Initiatives(APeL) to provide support and consultation for eLearning in the School of Education.

Below you will find helpful links and information about several of the institutionally supported digital tools available to William & Mary faculty and staff. You may find it helpful to explore your options for digital technologies while you are designing your instruction for Fall semester. As you prepare for the Fall, let us know if we can help. From Blackboard assistance to videoconferencing support to instructional design, we can help you navigate and integrate instructional technologies into your teaching and scholarship. If you do not find what you need, or would like assistance getting started this semester, please email April Lawrence. Welcome back to school!

Blackboard is William & Mary's Learning Management System (LMS). If you would like to create a Blackboard course area for your class, please visit the Blackboard Course Generator. You can find helpful step-by-step instructions on Information Technology's Blackboard Help for Faculty page.

Kristy Walker, William & Mary's new Academic Applications Specialist and the face behind Blackboard Help, will be in the School of Education for the Blackboard for Beginners session on Thursday, August 24th. You may also find the W&M Blackboard video tutorials helpful. Blackboard questions? Contact Mark Eaton or April Lawrence.

This summer, the Blackboard Mobile Learn app was replaced by two new Blackboard apps, one for students and one for instructors. If you are a Blackboard Mobile user, please delete the old app and download Blackboard Instructor from the App store. Learn more about Blackboard's new apps by visiting W&M IT's Blackboard Mobile Apps page.

After a year long pilot, the APeL office and and IT selected Poll Everywhere(Poll EV) as our campus supported student response system. We are excited to announce that beginning this Fall, William & Mary has upgraded to a campus wide site license for PollEV. This means that you may now use Poll Everywhere in your teaching for free at no cost to the students. There is Blackboard/Poll Everywhere integration, so you can easily import your students into Poll Everywhere and track their polling responses. Poll EV can be used to conduct individual formative assessment, to engage an audience, or to facilitate team or group responses. For information on getting started, check out IT's Poll Everywhere page. Additionally, eLearning Specialist Adam Barger will be present during Thursday's Lunch & Learn session to help you get started using Poll EV and to answer your questions.

Panopto is William & Mary's lecture capture system. Existing Panopto users will need to take a moment to upgrade to the latest version. You can do this by visiting the Panopto Tool in your Blackboard course area and selecting the appropriate installer. Upgrading to the latest version will give you new and improved features such as interactive quizzing, auto-captioning, and the ability to integrate YouTube clips into your Panopto recordings. All classrooms at William & Mary have already been upgraded, so you only need to install the current version of Panopto on your office or home computers. For new users, when you download Panopto for the first time, you will be downloading the most recent version. You will find Panopto in the Tools are of your Blackboard courses. For a more information, you are invited to attend our virtualGetting Started With Panopto Lunch & Learn session on Tuesday, August 22nd at Noon.

William & Mary's platform for web-conferencing is Zoom.  All William & Mary faculty have a basic Zoom subscription. With your basic subscription, you can host unlimited web meetings of up to 40 minutes in duration for up to 100 participants. Faculty and staff who need to host more than 100 participants, or who need to host meetings longer than 40 minutes in duration, can purchase a Pro account by visiting Request IT to submit a service request. If you have not yet activated your Zoom account, you can do so by visiting the W&M Zoom login page ( Zoom is integrated with W&M's SSO (single sign on), so you will enter your W&M credentials to activate your account. Please contact Brandon Corbett, Technology Support Engineer, if you would like a demonstration of Zoom.
