In Press: CFGE Curriculum

Dr. Kimberley Chandler, Director of CurriculumThe College of William and Mary’s CFGE has been developing and disseminating curriculum materials for almost 24 years. Originally, all materials were printed at the College and mailed from the CFGE. Since that time, the number of materials available has increased and we now publish through three different vendors. We continue to act as a vendor for self-published materials including Navigators, teaching model cards, and various other publications that are currently being revised. A student worker processes all orders, which are shipped by UPS. We are researching alternative methods for distributing these materials so that they can be delivered faster.

Prufrock Press publishes the Project Clarion units for teachers of primary students in Kindergarten to 3rd  grade. Eight units are available now, with a ninth under development. Prufrock also publishes the Jacob’s Ladder reading comprehension series. Level I is for grades 2 and 3, Level II for grades 4 and 5, and Level III for grades 5 and 6. Levels IV and V, which were just released, are designed for students in grades 7 to 9. Three mathematics units are published by Prufrock. Two more are in development, a measurement unit for kindergarten and first grade and a geometry unit for fourth and fifth grade. See http://www.prufrock.com/ for information about ordering these materials.

Kendall Hunt Publishing Company carries many of our materials:  science problem-based learning units for students in grades 2 to 8, social studies units for students in grades 2 to 12, and language arts units for students in grades 2 to 12. Please see http://www.kendallhunt.com/ for ordering information.

The nine language arts units were recently revised. In addition, Change Through Choices, which had been self-published, is now available through Kendall Hunt. Each revised unit has a minimum of four new literature selections. These include novels, short stories, and poems. Additionally, the teacher’s edition has many new enhancements:

  • Spiral binding
  • Overall unit organizer
  • Sample literature webs for all pieces of literature discussed in class
  • New activities in many lessons
  • Additional notes to teacher
  • Additional extension activities
  • List of alternative novels and sample activities
  • Novel Lexile measure information
  • Replacement selections for out-of-print books
  • Background content information for each lesson

The student book is now sold as a single copy, instead of in packages of 10. Each student book contains all short stories and poems, as well as all activity pages. For those of you who are considering transition to the second edition of the language arts units, there is no need to purchase everything immediately, as much of the literature and many of the activities are the same. If you would like to discuss possible options, please feel free to contact me.
