Jeremy Martin (Higher Education)

Class of 2012 - Educational Policy Planning and Leadership – Higher Education program

Jeremy MartinI spent the last seven years coaching basketball at a small college, the last four of which included some general administrative work for the institution. Through that experience, I found my career goals changing from intercollegiate athletics to college administration.

For the future, my career goal is to work in leadership at a small liberal arts college. When I decided to pursue that direction, it became clear earning a PhD was necessary. As I evaluated and contacted programs, my conversations with the higher education faculty at William & Mary, particularly Professor Dot Finnegan, showed how supportive the faculty are to the students.

In the end, I chose William & Mary over the University of Virginia because of the interest that the faculty expressed in me and in helping me reach my research and professional goals, as well as tailor a course of study to meet my individual needs. Once enrolled in the program, my actual experience as a doctoral student exceeded my expectations and I could not be more pleased with my choice.
