Undergraduate students who plan to major in science or mathematics and plan to teach science or mathematics in middle school or high school (6-12) are encouraged to apply for a summer fellowship to support a research and/or teaching experience. These summer fellowships will provide $450/week for up to eight weeks in the summer (total up to $3600*). Programs must be at least two weeks in length, and a Fellow can combine different programs to come up with a plan that is two to eight weeks in length (some examples: a two-week research program OR a four-week research program and two two-week teaching programs OR an eight-week teaching program). Teaching Fellowships will provide an opportunity for students to participate in the planning and delivery of instruction in order to develop realistic views on the challenges and rewards of teaching. Students may find such opportunities on their own, or may consult with Noyce/TCT faculty for ideas. Some examples are given below; many other possibilities exist:
- Working with Professor Mason or Professor Matkins at the College of William & Mary on an instructional program (e.g., summer science camp, professional development program for high school teachers, curriculum development project)
- Working at the Summer Enrichment Program in the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William & Mary
- Internship at a science museum, a wildlife center, a national or state park
- Instructor in a science camp or an environmental education center
- Volunteer in an urban science or math teaching program
- Research in science or math education working with a professor at the College of William and Mary or another institution
Research Fellowships will provide an opportunity for students to do research or to develop a deeper understanding of how research is conducted. Students may find research opportunities on their own, or may consult with Noyce/TCT faculty for ideas. Some examples are given below; many other possibilities exist:
- Research working with a faculty member at the College of William & Mary or another institution (a minimum of four weeks; some faculty would expect a commitment of six to eight or more weeks)
- Off-campus program to explore some aspect of mathematics or science that would develop a deeper understanding of how research is conducted
- Summer field school with some element of research (e.g., Marine Science Field Course, other summer field or laboratory programs)
- Research working in a state agency (Virginia Division of Mineral Resources) or national laboratory (e.g, NASA Langley, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Environmental Protection Agency).
- Research working with Professor Heideman (Biology Department) (four weeks; intended for students in this program)
Fellows will participate in a non-credit seminar that will meet occasionally during the summer. The seminar will provide structured opportunities to reflect on their experience in the context of teaching math or science. Students who take a fellowship off campus will participate in the seminar electronically. Summer Fellows will also submit a short essay, develop a webpage, and give a presentation about their Fellowship Program in the fall semester.
* Financial support on the Summer Fellowship Program requires that you have an interest and commitment to high school science or math teaching. Summer Fellowship funds are not part of the repayment requirement of Noyce Scholars who elect not to teach in a high needs school within six or eight years of graduation. Also, Summer Fellowship funds cannot be used for programs in which students are already getting paid.
